= used to explain that something or someone was intended to be or do a particular thing.
Pattern: I meant no + noun
I meant to + verb
- I meant no harm.
- I meant no offense.
- I meant it as a joke.
- I meant to make it up to her.
※ make up to (someone): to treat (someone) in a very kindly or helpful way in order to get something for oneself.
2. I didn't mean to...
= used to explain that something or someone was not intended to be or do a particular thing.
Pattern: I didn't mean to + verb (present tense)
- I didn't mean to lie.
- I didn't mean to say it like that.
- I didn't mean to make you feel bad.
- I didn't mean to injure.
3. I never meant to...
= conveys a stronger and more dramatic emotion
- I never meant to steal.
- I never meant to do this.
- I never meant to drop out of school.
- I never meant to cause any trouble.
4. It doesn't mean...
= used to explain that something or someone is not intended to be
- It doesn't mean I'm angry.
- It doesn't mean I'm going to see you again.
- It doesn't mean you and I can't date.
- It doesn't mean you're off the hook.
5. What I mean is...
= used to introduce someone's explanation or clarification
- What I mean is you haven't changed a bit.
- What I mean is he isn't your style.
- What I mean is never say never.
- What I mean is we grew apart.
